In Europe, Damien Hirst whips over two hundred art pieces into shape every year and has the work auctioned by Sotheby’s; In Asia, we have Murakami. The public’s intrigue towards Damien Hirst’s work elevates in proportion to its price tag; whereas Murakami voluntarily imposes a commercial image upon himself. Robert Storr, acclaimed American curator and academia, proclaimed ‘market value says little about art’. Out of the two, it is (arguably) truer in Murakami’s case. However, at the same time, it is perfectly viable that Murakami should have built his own art kingdom. He set up ‘Geisai’, a platform for young artists. Also ‘Kaikai Kiki’, his studio, has developed many recent young artists such as Takano Aya. Following the glorious success of ‘LOVE ART featuring Banksy’, Hong Kong gallery Fabrik Contemporary Art will be showing Murakami’s work in the new space located in Lan Kwai Fong, Central. The work of Mr. and Chiho Aoshima (both under Kaikai Kiki studio) will also be included in this exhibition.
