Ceramic is a traditional craft origin from Czech Republic. Although the craft is well developed and there is plenty of labour available, most designers achieve merely regularly novelty goods to be exported to other parts of Europe. It was not after 2000 that the design aspect began to be seen in a new light.
The two new designers Jakub Berdych and Maxim Velčovský set up their design label ‘Qubus’ in 2002, creating products with the finest ceramic techniques and contemporary design, as well as working on production for other local designers.
Most Qubus designs are by Maxim Velčovský, whimsical designs such as industrial-like ‘Waterproof Vase’, doll-head candle holder ‘Little Joseph’ and Cola-glass-inspired ‘Cola Cup’, all based on found objects. Although quite a few designers have a similar approach, Maxim’s is definitely with a personal touch. ‘I used to go around with my artist father since young, therefore Coca Cola came to my knowledge much earlier than a regular child in Czech. It used to be a big deal, to drink Coca Cola. If someone opens a bottle on the street, one bound to get much attention and asked to share.’ The concept of ‘Cola Cup’ obviously goes hand in hand with his own cultural history. It is this very sensitivity that is gaining him the recognition worldwide.
Qubus is now stocked in THINK SILLY Store.
