MOVIES ON THE MIND
PSYCHOLOGY AND FILM SINCE SIGMUND FREUD
Sigmund Freud considers dream to be the path to human’s inner mind, and the Hollywood was labeled as the ‘dream factory’ since 1930s. It could be a coincidence that our fascination on the mind and on film appears to be connected. Both occurred in the 19th Century, when the film industry was born.
Film directors and writers have long been interested in psychology and such matters. Since ‘Secrets of a Soul’ by Georg Wilhelm Pabst in 1926, the mind and subconscious has been a consistent theme in films across the Atlantis. Some of the most significant directors in this genre are Alfred Hitchcock, the master of suspension; Ingmar Bergman, the searcher for humanity and native Hong Kong avant-garde director Patrick Tam Ka-ming. All of them are directly inspired by the inner mind and spirit, and demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the human psychology in their unique manners.
‘Movies on the Mind’ selects ten films relevant to psychology, dreams and schizophrenia, to showcase how cinematic image and language can shed light on the enigmatic subject. A duo of talks will be held in Jan 2009, by psychology professionals and film critic alike.
