Separated from Videotage, Microwave is a multi-media art fair without the burden of establishment. In addition to digital and interactive media, it also includes various medium of hi-tech art. Titled ‘Transient Creatures’ and despite of its apparent ‘underground world’ association, the exhibition showcases science and technology related art work.
The title ‘Transient Creatures’ refers to an alternative biological world, as well as the fear and suspicion derived from the latest bio-engineering world. For example, ‘Disembodied Cuisine’ by ‘Tissue Culture & Art’ (Australia) is composed of coin-size steaks cultivated from frog DNA, available for the audience to taste. Although edible in theory, the texture of the ‘steak’ is suspicious and unpleasant.
Apart from the main venue, Microwave also set up a ‘Project Room Exhibition’ in the Hong Kong Film Archive exhibition hall showcasing new media art, award-winning short film ‘Arc Electronica’ and a selection of work from Shantou University Cheung Kong School of Art & Design.
