A TRIBUTE TO ROMANTIC VISIONS
25TH ANNIVERSARY OF FILM WORKSHOP
The exhibition started with a commercial registration document. Tsui Hark and Nansun Shi co-founded their studio in 1984, which later facilitated the golden era of Hong Kong cinema. Film Workshop is responsible for nearly fifty productions, which many of them become classics. ‘A Better Tomorrow’, ‘A Chinese Ghost Story’, ‘Swordsman, and ‘Once Upon a Time in China’ were blockbusters. More avant-garde productions such as ‘I love Maria’, ‘Shanghai Blues’, ‘Green Snake’, ‘Wicked City’ and ‘Time & Tide’ established a more arty side to local cinema, and a memorable one.
Film Workshop ‘nourishes, corrects and improves’ film productions, introduced visual technologies which is especially evidential in improving and re-mastering hero films and traditional costume operas. Twenty five executive years, the studio is still keeping its creative flare. ‘Missing’ is a transformation from the ‘The Eye’ genre, and traditional costume opera animation. ‘Butterfly Murders’ production involved a large quantity of real butterflies, reminding one of ‘The Birds’ by Alfred Hitchcock. He is a living example of creative passion, and embodies the courage to pursue one after another stunning artistic vision.
