YAN FUNG COMPANY
A HIDDEN GEM IN
SHUM SHUI PO
Apliu Street in Sham Shui Po, Kowloon is an antique-hunting heaven. It is so well known that Futura, the graffiti artist, had to visit the area even at night. We have a few friends based in Apliu Street, ‘Yiu’ ─ Mr. Leung Kai Yiu (the owner of Yan Fung) being one of them. His shop is a hotspot in the area, boasting over several hundreds of antique and well-known classic cameras alike.
A photography lover and camera collector, Yiu devotes his life into cameras and lenses. His investment in the collection is no less than 2,000,000 Hong Kong dollars. Yiu’s son and daughter, however, do not seem to inherit this passion for cameras. He set up a one hundred square feet concept ‘shop-within-shop’ inside his electric appliances shop, and a photography group to promote black and white photography. Yan Fung has become a meeting place for photography lovers since 2000, claiming Chow Yun Fat as one of the friends. It is the authenticity and human touch that wins them over.
When THINK SILLY editorial team arrived in Yan Fung, we were attracted to several cameras straightaway. Apart from Leica M and R series, there are others highlights such as the vintage Zeiss folders, now obsolete Bronica and German Pentacon. Mainstream models such as Nikon, Canon and Hasselblad are also available. The sheer volume of the collection on show at Yan Fung is sure to impress any camera lovers.
