6 CLASSES ON JAPANESE CREATORS J & K
ICHIKAWA JUN & ICHIKAWA KAN
Often seen alongside Akira Kurosawa, Ichikawa Kan’s (1915 – 2008) spectrum of work adapts many literature works and witnessed the golden age of Japanese films. An innovator of visual images himself, Kan worked all the way through to his Nineties.
Ichikawa Jun (1948 – 2008) came from an advertising background. A fan of Yasujirō Ozu, Jun is also very fond of the minimal visual of Takeshi Kitano’s films. He started directing films in the 1980s, and known for a subtle elegant style. His artistic manner is mellow and contrived, Jun’s most well-known film being ‘Tony Takitani’ (an original work by celebrated Japanese writer Haruki Murakami).
The two directors passed away consequently in 2008. ‘Summer Classics’ shown eight films directed by Ichikawa Kan; the 30th Film Festival shown one film by Ichikawa Kan and four by Ichikawa Jun, with the three more by Ichikawa Kan, it is time for learning the masters’ work.
