AROUND THE EARBRIDGE
STARRING PHARRELL WILLIAMS, COSTUMES BY RICK OWENS AND BBC ICECREAM
From October 2008 to January 2009, Ooi Botos Gallery is showing Paris-based Chinese artist Yi Zhou’s ‘My Heart Laid Bare’. Featuring the Cannes’ best actress Charlotte Gainsbourg, the film has already gain critical acclaims. For ‘Around the Earbridge’, Yi Zhou took inspiration from a short story named ‘The Nose’ from Nikolai Gogol’s ‘Petersburg Tales’. ‘The Ear’ composes of a series of narrative photographs showing a detailed account of events leading to the short film.
The core of this set up includes Pharrell Williams (starred in ‘The Ear’); Ennio Morricone (the music composer); Rick Owens and BBC Icecream (costume design). In the short film Pharrell finds his detached ear in a pile of vegetable he is cutting. He then bandaged his head, Van Gogh style, a silent tribute to the artist. The severed ear started its own journey, experiences several phases of metamorphosis. The film concludes with Pharrell reading the newspaper reporting on the EarBridge in Baku in 2013.
‘Around the EarBridge’ is part of an extensive public design program taking place in Baku Azerbaijan in 2013. Celebrated Chinese contemporary artist Cai Guo-Qiang and award winning architect Jean Nouvel are some of the highlighting participants.
