EVERYTHING BUT THE KITCHEN SINK
MCQUEEN HAUTE COUTURE
AT JOYCE
Lush feather, houndstooth taking flight, M. C. Escher signature magpie, blood red full lips reflected on a shattered mirror… these are the tributes and challenges Alexander McQueen signed, sealed and delivered to the world of haute couture. Aluminum cans, plastic bags, posh tyres, wooden chairs and vintage lamp shades piled up high as the center piece of the A/W09 fashion show, conjuring memories of past time which quickly melt into a blur of ash-hue ruins.
Titled ‘The Horn of Plenty’, Alexander McQueen’s A/W09 collection serves as a retrospective of the fashion designer’s creative journey. Re-inventing 20th century haute couture, McQueen brought back key elements such as Audrey Hepburn style and Christian Dior houndstooth. In a short space of ten years, Alexander McQueen established himself firmly onto the fashion map. Hired by Givenchy haute couture house as their Chief Designer in his early days, McQueen bagged ‘British Designer of the Year’ in 1996, 1997, 2001 and 2003, as well as ‘International Designer of the Year’ at Council of Fashion Designer Awards. In 2007, its second line McQ won the ‘Fashion Director’s Award’. The man himself was recognized with a CBE (commander) of Britain. McQueen is celebrated for his countless memorable shows throughout the years, such as the finale with Chris-Cunningham-like robot airbrush in 1997.
Alexander McQueen 2009 haute couture collection has made its debut in Joyce Hong Kong. To mark the occasion, McQueen has designed a limited edition of 2GB USB (complete with a special short film inside) for the most loyal customers.
