DIESEL「CULTivate」
YOUNG KIM / SUITMAN CURATING A GLOBAL CREATIVE PROJECT
‘A project to nurture fresh talent and celebrate creativity in fashion, art and music’ is the concept behind Diesel ‘CULTivate’. This new project takes Hong Kong as its starting point, aiming to expand its worldwide territory and exhibiting local art projects in different global locations.
‘Why Hong Kong?’ Young Kim (Suitman), the guest curator for the exhibition, considers Hong Kong as his third home. ‘What we love most about here is its unique diversity and the mix of opposites co-existing alongside each other, such as how an old, tiny street-hawker booth is sandwiched between gigantic modern skyscrapers. For CULTivate, we decided to create an in-store art show in true Hong Kong “Dai Pai Dong” (hawker booth) style.’
Hitotzuki–Kami + Sasu (Tokyo), Lady Aiko (New York), Bomin Kim (Seoul), Black Panda – Jennifer Lew and Victor-John Villanueva (New York / Denver), Gwen Yip (Hong Kong), Anton Lopez (Hong Kong), University of Hong Kong Faculty of Architecture / Control Shift (Hong Kong), Lo Koon-Chiu (Hong Kong) and, of course, Suitman (New York / Tokyo / Hong Kong) – nine internationally-acclaimed artists are turning the hawker booth into their blank canvases, tailor-making extraordinary new work for CULTivate.
To celebrate its opening, the window of Diesel Planet Store is paying tribute to local comic artist Lo Koon Chiu. Lo is known for illustrating ‘Children’s Paradise’ covers and content from 1950s to 1990s. ‘We are celebrating Mr. Lo’s historical, creative contribution to Hong Kong’s art and culture.’ Young Kim proclaims.
