VITSΠNEW LONDON SHOP
TO CELEBRATE THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY
2009 marks the 50th anniversary of designer furniture label Vitsœ. Dieter Rams (designer of the classic Vitsœ 606 Universal Shelving System) presented the ‘Less, but Better’ talk at the London Victoria and Albert Museum back in February; The ‘Less and More: The Design Ethos of Dieter Rams’ exhibition also toured in Japan — in Suntory Museum (Osaka) from November 2008 to January 2009; Fuchu Art Museum (Tokyo, Japan) from May to July 2009. The exhibition catalogue ‘Less and More’ is completed with images of all the exhibits as well as essays on Dieter Ram. Despite of the above, the highlight, however, is the up coming exhibition in The Design Museum (London) from November 2009 to March 2010.
The 606 Universal Shelving System is designed by Rams in the 1960s. The classic design is recently spotted in the new Under Cover Aoyama shop, alongside with many designs by Ram during the Braun era. 2009 is a busy year for Vitsœ, not only they have set up an official website and online shop, developed retail network in Japan, opened its New York shop, and the new shop (situated in London West end) has also now opened its door. The 1928 historical building was originally built as a shop, later transformed into an office for about sixty years. The new shop will showcase the complete 606 Universal Shelving System, as well as the 620 Chair Programme Rams designed in 1962.
