THE NECESSITY OF SILENCE
BY ANGELA LAW
FILM COMPOSERS TALK ABOUT THE ART AND THEORY OF WRITING MUSIC FOR CINEMA
Angela Law is the only academic specialized in original soundtrack in Hong Kong. Apart from her lecturing duties, she also writes reviews and published books.
Law’s latest work ‘The Necessity of Silence ─ Film Composers Talk About The Art And Theory of Writing Music For Cinema’ is launching in 2010. It is set to be an important Chinese publication on the subject, including first-hand interviews with many influential musicians — Ennio Morricone, Zbigniew Preisner, Eleni Karaindrou, Michael Nyman, Philip Glass, George Fenton, Carl Davis, Terence Blanchard, In The Nursery, Joe Hisaishi, Otomo Yoshihide and film director Béla Tarr.
The absolute highlight is her chapter with Zbigniew Preisner (Krzysztof Kieslowski’s former creative partner, whom is known to have a very close relationship with Kieslowski). From Warsaw to Kraków, from divergent to convergent paths, from idol to flesh and blood… Law’s respect and admiration for Preisner is obvious between the lines. Law’s already started working on her fourth book based on the development of original soundtracks in Hong Kong.
