LOOK BACK AT MEMORIES
A CONVERSATION BETWEEN FILM AND CITY
Film interprets contemporary society and its time. What is portrayed on the screen, however, is not necessarily the same as our perception. With the ever-changing pace of the city as a backdrop, modern literary often serves as alternative records of history. Layer upon layer, all these material become a collective memory of ‘our city’ ─ captured under the lenses of Hong Kong film-makers.
As a respond to the eighth Hong Kong Literature Festival, Hong Kong Film Archive is launching the ‘Look Back at Memories’ series in July. Showing three films from the 1980s and 1990s ─ Jackie Chan’s (directing and acting offering) ‘Project A II’ (1987); ‘A Fishy Story’ (1989) starring Maggie Cheung; ‘He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Father’ (1993) featuring Tony Leung Ka-Fai and Tony Leung Chiu-Wai. These stories paint a picture of Hong Kong in its colonial era, reminding us the past as well as pointing to certain issues in the present.
