ARAKI NOBUYOSHI
TOKYO ARUKI
THE MONOTONE NIPPON STREETS
Photography is not merely a composition. Its colour, lighting and such details come together as an expression, communicating to the audience, subject or even the self. It is about passing on an experience, insight or feeling, a means to peak into the deeper realm of things.
The renown and controversial Japanese Photographer Araki Nobuyoshi is releasing a new series of photography work ─ ‘Tokyo Aruki’. Unlike the erotica he made a name for, it is about re-connecting with his birthplace. Entering the ‘sunset phase’ of his life, Araki captures Tokyo from an intimate perspective. Wandering through streets, alleys, following the over-hundred-year Yamanote Line and residential sky scrapers; Set off from South Aoyama and Roppongi, passing by Ginza, West Shinjuku, Hibiya Park and Shimokitazawa and back. The deliberately raw aesthetic of black and white images is suitably melancholic, its flavour not unlike black coffee with its subtle scent persisting in the air. Araki also put some personal memories into words, ‘Tokyo Aruki’ is an utterly memorable visual dairy.
