REPERTORY CINEMA 2010 – ALFRED HITCHCOCK
MASTER OF SUSPENSE RETURNS
Thrillers capture one’s mind by probing into the unknown. There seem to be a lack of this genre in recent years, as frightful characters and ghost stories are favoured by the audience. The language and interpretation of human nature, be it enhancement or contradiction, seem to be overlooked by contemporary filmmakers. ‘The Repertory Cinema 2010 – Alfred Hithcock’, as organized by Film Programmes Office, serves as a much needed reminder of the art of suspense in cinema.
Alfred Hitchcock (1899 – 1980) made its name for mastering the element of suspense in films, and became known as master of the genre. Hugely influential, he analyses and narrates the dark side of human nature through story telling. With montage and close-ups as signature, his forte is to create tension through the lens. Senses stimulation aside, Hitchcock’s work investigate the psychology of human being and society.
Twenty films are selected in this retrospective, including ‘Psycho’, ‘Vertigo’, ‘Spellbound’ and ‘The Man Who Knew Too Much’. Talks will be held after screenings, further details are available on www.lcsd.gov.hk/fp.
