MEDAL OF HONOR
A STEP IN THE AFGHANISTAN WAR
The ‘Medal of Honor’ series, manufactured over the past eleven years by EA, is now consists of sixteen games. Previously set in World War II, the latest game adopts recent headline war, taking place in Afghanistan since 2001.
Based on real US Special Forces, the characters are placed in ‘Tiers 1’ – namely Navy Seals, Delta Force and Army Rangers. The player can take on four separate roles to organise a joint mission. Apart from hunting down terrorists, one has to collect intelligent knowledge, save hostage and protect vital military bases.
The background settings include dessert area, riverside, mountain, snowy mountain-top and even back alleys in the city. The modes are not limited to shooting up front. The player can also make a stealth attack in the dark, call for cover or operate helicopter equipped with bombs. To make it more realistic, soldiers were invited to take part in its development, to provide advice on the attack technique and weapon setting. The fire gun sound in the game is, in fact, recorded from real shooting. The game accommodates up to twelve characters (and twelve opponents), with each stage of the game floats more seamlessly than in the past.
In real life, the game has drawn the attention of US army due to the fact that the players can also play as Taliban army and attack US army. The public and United Kingdom Ministry of Defence already expressed disapproval and banned the game from over three hundred stockists. ‘Medal of Honor’ fans will have to look elsewhere.
