Francis Coppola is surely a familiar name to many, his daughter Sofia Coppola has also established herself as a film director with debut ‘The Virgin Suicides’ (starring Kirsten Dunst). It was a hit amongst critics at the Cannes Film Festival; followed by ‘Lost in Translation’ (starring Scarlett Johansson), winning Best Original Screenplay at the Oscar; ‘Marie Antoinette’ received mixed reviews, but served as a demonstration of her ambitious aesthetic. Coppola’s latest work ‘Somewhere’ was awarded with Gold Lion Award, the highest honour at the Venice Film Festival, even before it was officially released.
The story of Hollywood actor Johnny (played by Stephen Dorff) is a typical one, surrounded by race car, women, alcohol and drugs. One day Cleo (played by Elle Fanning), his eleven-year-old daughter with an ex-wife, comes to seek for his care. It brings about a crucial and much needed change in Johnny’s life. They travel afar and grow close, urging Johnny to gain a perspective on their future.
The filming took place in the U.S. (Los Angeles) and Italy; the set up and story are allegedly inspired by Sofia Coppola’s own childhood, giving the audience an insight into her world.
