A SPECIAL TALK WITH DOMINIQUE LEVY
ART HK11 took place at Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, attracting 260 international galleries from 38 countries. L&M Gallery (from New York) focused on post war America., the founder and director Dominique Levy especially paid a trip to Hong Kong with over ten exhibits – the famous Mao portrait by Andy Warhol, colour painting and faux-plastic (made in concrete and steel) sculptures by Jeff Koons, ash painting by Chinese artist Zhang Huan as well as art work by Pablo Picasso, Damien Hirst, Alexander Calder and more. Dominique Levy claimed ‘Since Art Basel bought a significant share, ART HK11 has become an international platform. This is my first time here, and already I see the impact of international galleries showing in the fair. It sparks off many interesting discussion. Although Asia art scene is still in its early stage compare to Europe, HK ART11 is definitely a highlight in Asia.’
Showcasing young artists this time, Dominique Levy considers furniture to be a valid addition; also, Chinese artists are not to be overlooked. ‘To me, it’s not about nationality; it is simply a matter of distinguishing good art and bad art. Chinese artists have caught the eyes of many, their creativity and talent is astonishing. I have an ash painting by Zhang Huan, it tells you so much about what a young man thinks about the Cultural Revolution. Many came to ask about this piece, I hope it will finally return to the hands of a Chinese art collector.’
