Walking up from Gough Street, Xava is just ten steps along –– situated above the steep road that is Mee Lun Street, with a mini grass field in its front and a six feet David statue in blue (a very similar shade to the shop wall). Stepping inside, the floor is covered with sixteen century retro floor tiles made in Indonesia. Individually burnt and hand painted, they are made to last for a century.
Xava’s selection is different from most homeware stores, its wallpaper is one of its main focuses. Stocking British designer and artist Louise Body — Birdies, her collaboration series with Paul Smith; Plant Life, nominated for Elle Decoration British Design Awards; paper tiles inspired by the Victorian period – all imported from the U.K and made with paper paste derived from sustainable forest in Europe (especially noted for those who are eco-savvy). Scrap wood pattern wallpaper by Piet Hein Eek is made with non-woven paper, the pattern resembles real wood. Other categories include cushion, homeware, wall decoration, scented candles and even washing liquid. Each item is handpicked by the owner from all over the world, according to everyday needs — carpet made with green material; yoga ball wrapped with eco velvet; heat proof pattern dining utensils; room and textile spray. Bringing quality goods from U.S. and Europe, Xava is a fantastic addition to the neighbourhood.
