DELSTORE
POSSIBILITIES IN LIFE AND ART
Walk through Queen’s Road in Wan Chai, step on the stone staircase, it leads one to Delstore – recently opened in September. Passionate about Japanese culture, the owner Derrick would like to bring the quintessential atmosphere into the space. ‘They are very receptive of the new, and try hard to understand instead of laying down instant judgment’. Tirelessly searching for the perfect location, he finally decided on the current space.
The shop is divided into two floors, the first features outdoor clothing and accessories from the U.S. and Japan, including Big John, Hollywood Ranch Market (over twenty years history in Daikanyama), Yuketen (established in 1983 in U.S., renowned for its shoe-making craftsmanship), Omnigod (derived from Okayama, Japan). The overall palette is a minimalistic shade of white, with natural light filtering in through the glass wall, amber hue emits from light bulbs, wooden and metal shelving, ethnic pattern rug — channeling retro style outdoor atmosphere.
On to the second floor. A different set up: wooden study desk, desk top lamp, book shelves and chairs are unified in classic style. Scattered on top are film, art and fashion publications, collected by Derrick during his travel. ‘I feel there aren’t many shops that sell foreign magazines here, and it’s all about quality rather than quantity. Therefore I set up this corner for customers to sit down and read. I hope the space will cultivate conversation and inspired communication, in a relaxing environment’. Highlights from the collection are renowned lifestyle magazine Ku:nel, Comme des Garçons original catalogues, Mika Ninagawa photography book and signed copy of Mirai-Chan by Kawashima Kotori.
“There is a lot more to everyday life, on top of materialistic aspect like clothing. In here, you’ll find books like Plates and Dishes, published by Stephen Schach. The photo book is filled with pictures of American meals, a fast food culture that is completely different from culinary culture in Europe. There is also a photo book by Mario Sorrenti, feauting his campaign for Dolce & Gabbana in 1994. This kind of Nineties aesthetic is nowhere to be found in Italy now.” Derrick explained.
