CHANEL
2012 SPRING/SUMMER RUNWAY SHOW
“The shapes of sea life are ultra-modern, beautiful and timeless.” Karl Lagerfeld’s “Marine” theme for Chanel’s 2012 spring/summer collection was presented at the customary Grand Palais venue in Paris. With pearl white sandstones as the floor bed and decorations including corals, seaweed, tropical fish and sponge models as backdrops; the setting was rounded off with a giant shell as the entrance of the runway.
Silicone, cellophane and fibreglass were the key materials for the spring/summer collection, as these light and practical elements have enabled the creation of the weightless designs on display. With ceramic pink, coral red, pearl white and sea blue as the key palette, the collection is full of designs that are cut unevenly from the front to the back, showcasing the well-executed tailored forms. The brand’s staple item, the Tweed Jacket, has been fused into shirts, while cropped and open back variants can also be seen. Other highlights include denims with plastic coatings, and skirts with quilted and crinkle cotton shells. Furthermore, sea life-inspired handmade details such as black lace, geometric braids and the sequin lace jackets’ silicone decorations are definitely something to watch out for in the upcoming season.
On the accessories side of things, key pieces include leather handbags with adorned pearl white resin shells and pearls, silicone jellyfish-shaped bags, the classic quilted number, and black and white short boots are also included to complete the collection. Matching with the white pearl decorations around the model’s necks, these pieces have emphasized the flowing beauty of the label’s spring/summer image.
