50TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS AT DELSTORE
Shanghai-born optician Mr.Wilson N.S. Cheng arrived in Hong Kong in 1961 to develop his eyeglass business. The Asia Optical Co. was situated in Chungking Mansions, Tsim Sha Tsui. Eyeglasses were not as accessible to the public at the time, and were mainly worn by professionals such as doctors, lawyers and architects. There were only seventeen opticians in Hong Kong, with Asia Optical Co. being one of the few who stocks European brands and own brand designs. Its clientele included well known figures in the business world, pilot and Hollywood producer. Known for its perfectionist approach, the company sets an example in the industry in early Hong Kong.
Asia Optical Co.’s new generation Martin took over in 2007, renaming the business as ‘AOC1961’— a name that combines its tradition and present. To celebrate its fiftieth anniversary, AOC1961 has set up a point of sale in Delstore (located on Schooner Street, Wan Chai). Displaying the latest AOC1961 series, including ‘Wilson’ (named after Mr. Cheung), ‘Shanghai’ (named after his birth place) and ‘No. 122’ (named after the Chungking Mansion store); all handnmade by theLIGHT in Sabae (Fukui, Japan). Also on display are original designs from the Sixties, a tribute to its heritage; as well as authentic notebooks with handwriting — pieces of the past to showcase its history.
