CAMPER TOGETHER SPRING/SUMMER 2012
BY BERNHARD WILLHELM AND ROMAIN KREMER
CAMPER is a Spain company that is established in 1975, and has been integrating innovative ideas into traditional shoe-making technology since its establishment. It has gradually transformed high-quality footwear products into a unique life-style. Every different CAMPER product line has its own unique meaning and identity, and the most compelling out of all is the CAMPER TOGETHER series. By combining a brand new production method with design ideas that come from artists from all around the world, CAMPER has successfully created an astonishing design that consists of its original attributes and artistic elements of different cultural backgrounds.
In the spring 2012 season, CAMPER has invited German fashion designer Bernhard Willhelm to design the TOGETHER series. Berhard has graduated from the Royal College of Art in Belgium and has interned under Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen, where he has developed a strong sense of imaginative aestheticism. He has published his first set of work in Paris in 1999; his use of vivid color and irregular cutting that does not follow any rule of traditional fashion has rapidly made him famous in the field of fashion. Berhard’s clothing design that is featured in the “Volta” album by Bjork of Iceland in 2007 further reveals his abstract ideas and design. His collaboration with CAMPER this time focuses the theme on hiking shoes, using it as a design backbone and building it with variety materials such as leather, nylon and plastic. The fat shoelaces remind people of mountaineering ropes while the sides of the shoes retain the iconic wavy design. The appropriate use of rich color delivers a pleasant first impression. In addition, there are also models that figure an urban forest theme, with different phrases printed on the shoe tongues. On the other hand, women’s scandals adopt an interesting word card puzzle design.
Another designer who has participated in the design of the TOGETHER series this season is Romain Kremer from France. He has graduated from Duperré College of Art in Paris and has worked at Christian Dior after his graduation. His innovative design concepts and his outstanding achievement at Hyeres International Fashion and Photography Festival have successfully made him stand out from a congregation of young designers. Kremer has published his first set of work when he is 21 and is appointed as the menswear chief designer of the French fashion brand – Thierry Mugler in 2010. In his collaboration with CAMPER this time, he focuses his design on sewing plastic materials with different colors on the heels, adding a bold and innovative cutting to the traditional Derby Shoe design. The shoes are also coupled with soft, durable leather and customized insoles that provide excellent feet protection and comfort. The design reveals Kremer’s good use of color features, creating a strong sense of contrast while retaining the classic style of CAMPER.
